DVD Reviews
One West Sussex JEC member when asked what he thought of it after a packed Club showing said, "I'm still sweating!"
Classic Driver E-Magazine has this very complimentary new review for us (May 2004):
DVD Review - Sideways in a D-Type!
Here's a short extract of quite a long review:
"Not produced by a top-level film company, this DVD is nevertheless a superb example of race-driving at its finest.
One can imagine Hawthorn, Hamilton and Moss circulating at much the same sort of speed in the ‘50s.
Tony Dron, the other protagonist, rates it highly, in fact he's "Never seen anything of its kind that's so exciting".
Win Percy has not been well recently and the net proceeds of the DVD and video sales will go to help him.
Ever-friendly to Classic Driver over the years at race-meetings throughout Europe, we are pleased to publicise this film for
Win and wish him all the very best in the future."
Well known Jaguar author and historian Paul Skilleter gave us this advance Review:
"As one of the comparative few to have seen an advance copy of this DVD, I can certainly vouch for its entertainment value.
And educational value too, because quite apart from the edge-of-your-seat, lap by lap racing footage, Win Percy gives
a masterclass in driving Goodwood in a 1950's historic sports racing car that would be of huge value to
anyone driving a classic sports car on that famous circuit. Or any car there, come to that, as Win's commentary on braking points, angles of approach and the correct positioning for all Goodwood's curves (most of them pretty fast and intimidating, with little margin for error) are absolutely invaluable for anyone wanting to improve their lap times. Or be a bit safer…"
"However, even if you will never drive on this or any other circuit, this DVD is still highly educational
as it shows most graphically what's involved in driving a D-type to (and sometimes slightly over) its limit.
It brings home exactly what it was like for all the famous drivers who once raced the 'D' - such as Hawthorn, Moss,
Rolt, Hamilton, Bueb, Flockhart and even Jim Clark."
"The mixture of driver's eye view and trackside camera sequences - often shown together, so that you can see
how Win reacts to situations from inside the cockpit as you follow the car's progress from the outside -
work extremely well. Another aspect I liked was that the 14 lap race itself is covered in its entirety,
so you can 'live' the race yourself in real time; so often with such films, editing cuts out some laps
and thus destroys the continuity. But here, you get the build up of excitement from the warming up lap,
the start and through the entire race, complete with the drama of the dice with Tony Dron in the younger
and more nimble Ferrari. I found it particularly fascinating to see how these two highly experienced and highly
competitive drivers dealt with race tactics, their cars and each other.
"Although the Goodwood race action forms the bulk of the DVD, not to be missed either are the interviews
with Norman Dewis (who was responsible for the race development and proving of the D-type in its Le Mans winning hey-day),
and with Win himself - from an easy chair not the D-type's cockpit this time. They both talk about their experiences with Jaguars,
with Win recounting his amazing 200mph plus crash at Le Mans with the XJR-8LM in 1987.
"Now I do have to confess that this DVD appeals to me for personal reasons too; firstly, Goodwood has a special place in my affections
as it was there that I saw my very first motor race, back in the spring of 1966. It closed later that year for active racing,
though remained open for private practice and I recall a memorable drive there in an ex-Cunningham lightweight E-type
in 1975 (I certainly wish I'd had the advantage of Win's advice all those years ago; but then, some of us didn't
even have colour television in those days, let alone any recording medium!).
"The originators of the DVD do not claim to be professional film editors, and no doubt an experienced director could pick faults. I couldn't, and in any case, the visual and audio Jaguar treat is such that I would be prepared to overlook any slight technical deficiencies even if there were some. The quality is good throughout and I can only say in conclusion that the production is worth every penny of the asking price."
